Adam Davis’ senior gallery show is an immersive experience. You attend a gallery show that leads you to further exploration. CSU East Bay’s Old Kiln Room Gallery has been transformed into a lived-in studio space with additional unlockable content. A key opens a private studio door, a hidden code is the combination to open a lockbox. To those willing to persevere, this experience culminates in an artist-led guided tour of the Art & Education building, which leads to a locations outside of the gallery, giving further insight into the experience of a middle-aged artist returning to school. This journey is has not been a simple easy linear path, and this difficulty is reflected in the presentation of this final journey.
This is not for everyone.
Many will only look at the art on the walls. Some will try to follow to the clues to the end. Only a few will see this through to the end.
This is for them.
What are the boundaries set by our artistic expression? Where is the line? I wanted to show that art is more than what we put on the canvas. Just as important as the creation of art is the setting in which we place our art. The audience, however passive or engaged, should be able to experience the gallery space as more than four walls containing the works of art. Moreover, the gallery and its surroundings should be considered art as well. I have focused not only on displaying my artwork in an aesthetically pleasing way, but also transforming the gallery space into an artistic expression of myself as an artist. This has come more into focus as I learned what I am able to “get away with” within this space.
